Top Ten of 2007

This is an older post of mine from Facebook but I figured it should be on here too. Enjoy

In no particular order:

El-P "I'll Sleep When You're Dead"
You know when you open your mouth to try and describe something so amazing and wonderful but nothing comes out... just like squeeks of air. No matter what you say or how you can describe how fucking amazing that something is, they will never understand. Yea... thats how I feel about this album.

Shipwreck A.D. "Abyss"
This is the one album that brought the mosh in my car this year. "Erebos "has one of the most brutal guitar riffs in it. Each time I hear it i want to grab the nearest baby by the legs, start to swing in a circle and let go. This album brought so much car mosh I had to buy new springs

Pelican " City of Echoes"
One of the albums I had been looking forward to since their last release "Australasia" I'll be blunt, I've smoked so much weed to this band that I was so excited for the new album. I was expecting heavy and I got it... in a different way. The drums for one time is what sticks out about this album. Crushing when he needs to even if during a poppy guitar solo. It happens. Big difference from the other albums but just as good.

Randit "Wolf With A Shield"
I went to H.s. with Randy and no way did I ever think this would come out of him. I like this album because Randy plays a banjo and thats awesome. Even more awesome? Him playing it live. Goddamn, so much stage presence I feel like a child. Damn.. that banjo, so awesome. I also like it because parts make me feel like I'm on my deathbed and the next will make me feel like I'm walking w my love in a wonderful forest. Yea, montage style.

Amy Winehouse "Back to Black"
My surprise album of the year. Say what you want about her, she has a hell of a voice and her lyrics are fun and sassy. I don't just a good album. ::Shrugs::

Aesop Rock "None Shall Pass"
So you know what I said about the El-P album... Same way I feel about this album. Fuck I feel that way about every Aesop Rock album but fuck.. I got this feeling twice this year with music. That doesn't happen. Move on now...

Tegan And Sara "The Con"
This album makes me feel like a 17 yr old girl. But since their lesbians I don't feel that way. Just like a 17 yr old again. I relate to the album, it's catchy and cute to listen to when you're looking out the window on a raining day being mopey. I thank Ms. Sophia Wiley for bringing this album to my attention, I appreicate it.

Hour Of The Wolf "Waste Makes Waste"
This album floored me.Now when I think kick ass fucking rock and roll music, I think of this band. I want to fight zombies, get in car chases, and sacrifice virgins with this as my soundtrack. Fuck whatever indie magazine or fucking hipster trash tells you what rock and roll is, this sir is fucking rock and roll.

Blacklisted " Peace on Earth, War on Stage"
I've been listening to the evolution of this band and I love where it's going. The lyrics are achingly familiar, knowing exactly what he's talking about. 4 songs, 6 minutes of frustrated screaming along. I don't know what else to say.

Artificia "Demo 2007" or whatever the fuck they're calling it now
What can I say. I'm so stoked that a demo finally came out from these guys. We all knew they were talented and finally we're getting the proof. Been awesome watching it evolve so far and I can tell you it's only going to get bigger and better. Every song; Different delivery, different styles, and beats coming out of nowhere cause shit is crazy. But guess what folks, they're just getting started. Pick this shit up and share with everyone, spread the word.

My 5 Fav. Black Sabbath Songs

So I have been spending a lot of time lately listening to the Ozzy era of Black Sabbath. While laying in bed last night, not being able to sleep once again, I decided I should make a list of my favorite songs as of this moment. Of course this list may change but I doubt it. These are the songs that I've always been drawn to and go nuts for every time I hear them. So in particular order:

"N.I.B." from the album "Black Sabbath"

First off, fucking bass solo. I dare you to say one bad thing about Geezer's bass playing. Lyrically, it's written from Satan's point of view as he tempts another soul. What really sells it for me is Ozzy's voice, which I would like to point out never sounds the same on any of the songs. They may sound close but close doesn't count. Instead of coming off sinister and evil Ozzy gives us another perspective, his voice sounding as if he is pleading, begging almost for the soul that he is tempting. This was also one of the first Black Sabbath songs I learned to whistle with "The Wizard" being the next.

"Children of the Grave" from the album "Master of Reality"

The drumming on this album is what initially attracted me to it. At points, such as the intro, it sounds like Bill Ward is hitting a trash can. This is the album that where Tony Iommi started to tune down heavily, giving the album a much darker sound and this song stands out to be as the darkest. The ending is also very creepy with Children of the Grave being repeated over and over again till it fades out.

"War Pigs" from the album"Paranoid"

Yea, yea I know everyone loves this song. Honestly it is one of those songs that reign true no matter what generation you come from. The theme of those in charge starting wars and sending the poor out to fight hits home whether you are from the Vietnam era or the Iraq war era. The way that Ozzy delivers the song and especially when he sings with no music backing him gives me the mental image of a preacher spitting fire and brimstone at his transfixed audience. His message loud and clear and instead of a choir throwing out "AMEN!" behind him, we have Geezer and Iommi's guitar playing along with Bill Ward's cymbal taps. Plus the mental image of "SATAN LAUGHING, SPREADS HIS WINGS, OH LORD!" is enough to make you understand why so many people were scared shitless when Black Sabbath originally came out.

"Paranoid" from the album "Paranoid"

Yea, yet again a staple Black Sabbath song but what grabs me by the balls is the songs tempo. Every time I hear it, I want to start a fire and immediately start circle pitting around it while people are being sacrificed behind me. Iommi's guitar solo is fucking awesome and it is one of the most covered Black Sabbath songs for a reason.

"Symptom of the Universe" from the album "Sabotage"

This song is heavy. Honestly the opening guitar riff in my opinion is one of the heaviest fucking riffs Iommi has ever written. I have a hard time describing the feelings I have for this song, so I am going to make my best attempt right now. If I am ever involved in some sort of riot or anarchist violent acts, I want this song to be the soundtrack. Vikings wished they had this fucking song playing in the background as they raped and pillaged. Even when the tempo changes at 3:34 and then goes into the solo it's still heavier than some of the bullshit that passes as metal today. While the lyrics completely contradict how this song makes me feel, it doesn't take away from how heavy this song actually is.

So yea everyone should go smoke a bunch of weed and listen to Black Sabbath now. I demand it of you.
